The Vista School serves children who are functioning on the moderate-to-severe end of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), preparing them to function in their communities with increasing independence. Vista currently serves more than 68 children with ASD, who range in age from pre-kindergarten to secondary school, and reside in the following counties: Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York Counties.
Vista plans to apply the $25,000 gift towards the development of an aquatics center at its new campus in Hershey, PA. Several studies in recent years have found that wandering-related factors, such as drowning, are some of the leading causes of death of individuals with autism. The mortality rate in a 2008 study was found to be more than 300 percent higher for those with autism than that of the general population. The new aquatics center provides Vista with a unique opportunity to address this problem by teaching swimming skills and danger awareness, promoting physical fitness.
