Neurofibromatoses (NF) are genetic disorders of the nervous system that cause tumors to form on the protective covering of the nerves, anywhere in the body at any time. There are three distinct forms of NF, the effects of which are unpredictable and have varying degrees of severity and manifestations. NF is the most common genetic disorder, affecting approximately 1 in 2,500 people.
The initial $1,000 grant provided funds for NF Midwest’s annual “Great Steps for NF” fundraising walk in Naperville, IL, which raises money to support the research, community awareness, advocacy, clinical care and support provided by Neurofibromatosis Midwest.
